Natural radioactivity of surface Soil samples in coastal regions between Tripoli and Zawiya

(abdulrhman salem alajeeli - University of GRIAN, Faculty of Education, Department of physics)
ملخص

The activity concentrations of the natural radionuclides 226Ra, 232 Th, and 40K were measured using a high-purity germanium detector in surface soil samples collected from the regions along the coast between Tripoli and Zawiya, The radiological hazard indices like the outdoor absorbed gamma dose rate and their corresponding annual effective dose and excess lifetime cancer risk, radium equivalent activity and external hazard index were also calculated to assess the radiological impacts caused by the terrestrial radionuclides on the population working and living in the selected regions. The levels of natural radioactivity and radiation hazard parameters were compared with the international recommended values. All obtained results were found to be below the international recommended limit. This indicates that the soils considered were safe and can be used in the building of dwellings and sources of construction material without giving any radiological hazard to the local population.
